French-Canadian pop-punkers Simple Plan are currently in the midst of their Bigger Than You Think! The Sequel tour across North America , bringing their successful tour from last summer to additional markets, with many dates already sold out. Once again, they are accompanied by fellow Warped Tour alumni Bowling for Soup and 3OH!3, for a nostalgia-packed show of fun for all. Last Saturday, thousands braved a 100+ degree heat index to come out and see the show at Oklahoma City’s Zoo Amphitheatre, and The Encore Nights had the privilege of capturing the energy.
First to take the stage in the blistering heat was Bowling For Soup, who immediately got the crowd hyped up with their hits “Girl All The Bad Guys Want,” “High School Never Ends,” and “Almost.” Despite the heat, the crowd was amped up, and the band even joked about asking the lighting guy to ‘turn down that big one up there,’ gesturing to the sun itself. Though their opening set was brief, they were able to squeeze in many of their most notable tracks, including “Today’s Gonna Be a Great Day,” a.k.a. the theme song for Phineas and Ferb, “Ohio (Come Back to Texas), as well as covers of Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag” and their rendition of SR-71’s “1985, and they got the sweaty crowd hyped up for the evening to come. Next up was 3OH!3, an electronic pop duo consisting of college friends Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte, known for their eclectic party tracks that can (and will) send any listener back to the club days of the late 2000s/early 2010s. Opening with their hits “PUNKBITCH” and “STARSTRUKK,” they made it feel like stepping into a MySpace scene kid time machine. Throughout the set, they also made multiple running jokes about trying to garner a beef jerky sponsorship from Old Trapper’s Old Fashioned jerky, with Motte throwing pieces of jerky into the crowd – therein also proving that, despite the iconic lyric in “DON’TTRUSTME,” neither is currently a vegetarian. Accompanied by Jess Bowen of The Summer Set on drums, a scene icon in her own right, the duo brought the masses to their feet with tracks like “RICHMAN,” new single “MY FRIENDS,” and “My First Kiss” before closing with their biggest hit, the aforementioned “DON’TTRUSTME.” Are they lyrical geniuses? Debatable. Is their live set an extremely fun time? Abso-freaking-lutely. For more on 3OH!3, check out our recent interview with the duo here.

Finally, just after 9 p.m., when the sun had finally set and it was merely “warm” and no longer “blistering,” Simple Plan emerged, confetti and CO2 cannons ablaze as they jumped into their hit “I’d Do Anything, followed by recent release “Nothing Changes” and throwback hit “Shut Up!” The quartet, consisting of vocalist Pierre Bouvier, drummer Chuck Comeau, and guitarists Jeff Stinco and Sebastien Lefebvre, were running around the stage with an amazing energy, which could be felt by the crowd who was singing and dancing along all night.
The setlist was an excellent blend of their top throwback hits, like “Addicted,” “Welcome to My Life,” “Untitled (How Could This Happen to Me),” and encore picks “I’m Just a Kid” and “Perfect,” mixed with some newer selections like “Jet Lag,” and “Astronaut.” For extra nostalgia points, they also added in a cover medley of “All Star,” “Sk8r Boi,” and “Mr. Brightside.” Near the end of the set, in homage to their theme song for What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, they also brought a crowd of people in Scooby-Doo-themed costumes on stage to dance around while they played said theme song.
Though the heat was absolutely brutal, the Bigger Than You Think! The Sequel tour is a must-see for anyone either wanting to relive their Warped Tour days, or bring their kids along to help introduce the music of their youth to the next generation.
The current tour resumes on August 11 in Indianapolis, IN before continuing on, concluding on August 22 at none other than Vans Warped Tour in the band’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec. All upcoming Simple Plan tour dates can be found on their website.
