It was a beautiful Friday night and fans lined up to get a good spot for British singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone, at Variety Playhouse. Her captivating and eternal album Cruel World, follows Holly down a rabbit hole of loneliness, confidence, and heartache. Her fans could not wait to hear this new album. Holly’s stage design teleports us to medieval times, with a magical twist.
Opening act Diva Smith, walked out in a white dress with red polka dots. With the help of her guitar, her angelic voice got the crowd swaying. She played some songs from her new EP, Sunny Surrender. She also played “I Can See In The Dark, “ and “2 Step,” two synth-pop upbeat songs, but it was beautiful to hear just Diva and her guitar.

At 9pm “So It Starts…” began and Holly walked out in a short white lace dress. After the interlude, she went straight into “Make It All Better,” a song about satisfaction in a relationship. Holly’s enchanting voice echoed throughout the venue. Then she sang “To Love Somebody,” her most popular song from the album, and screams erupted. The British singer also sang some of her old songs, from her first album Can You Afford To Lose Me?, such as “The Walls Are Way Too Thin,” and “Paint My Bedroom Black.” Fans of Holly for years could not contain their excitement, and cheered with joy, when she performed it.
The night continued with “Deep End,” an emotional ballad that showcased her powerful voice, and “Falling Asleep At The Wheel,” a synth-pop track that got the fans jumping around. Holly’s stage presence was nothing short of excellent. With every song her confidence skyrocketed and with the fans help, it was a memorable night for everyone in the room. I saw Holly open up for Olivia Rodrigo back in 2022, and it was great seeing her then, but this tour showed me that Holly is someone to look out for.
