Song Review: “Dinner Party” by Niall Horan

After a stacked 2024, with a world tour of his album “The Show,” singer/songwriter Niall Horan took time off and tucked himself away in a studio. After his much needed time away, we now have “Dinner Party,” a song that follows how he met his girlfriend and that love is out there for everyone.

The opening line talks about a game that a majority of people may be unfamiliar with, “Picking up boxes with our teeth / Playing games we’ve never played before.” In an interview with Hits Radio, Niall explains this game of getting an empty cereal box and from the floor using only their mouths, and after each round the box is cut shorter. With this being a very personal opening line, it shows that Niall isn’t afraid to let us into his life. His little melodies in the beginning of the track draws you in, and with that opening line, you’re curious for more.

In the chorus, Niall describes his first encounter with his true love, and what he sees for them in the future, “Crashing lights when you first saw me / Yeah, I met you at a dinner party / Chandeliers, 2 a.m. coffee.” The Irish singer-songwriter is starstruck and he does an exceptional job explaining his own “butterflies in my stomach” moment. The way Niall can just write these lyrics and express his feelings so openly, is refreshing to hear.

This new era is full of love, life, and loss. In Heartbreak Weather, we experienced a lot of sad songs with high energy sounds and unforgettable guitar riffs. Now he’s more relaxed and feels at peace in his life.
