Arizonian comedy-metal band Psychostick is back out on the road across the United States, bringing their unique brand of “humorcore” to the masses alongside fellow 2000s rockers Polkadot Cadaver. While their music is certainly less serious than what I typically listen to, their recent stop at Oklahoma City’s Beer City Music Hall proved that especially when the world seems to be collapsing around us on a daily basis, sometimes you just need to let loose and do the “Hokey Fucking Pokey” in a crowded room, as their set was genuinely one of the most unhinged yet hilariously fun performances I’ve seen.

Kicking off the night was OKC local band Spacecowboy – though I did not quite make it in the doors in enough time to snap any photos of them, the self-proclaimed “Southern Post-Hardcore” act helped warm up the crowd nicely.

Serving as main support for the night was Polkadot Cadaver, a Maryland-based experimental rock band known for its horror themes, as evidenced by song names such as “Chloroform Girl” and “Bloodsucker”. Having formed from the remnants of 90s/2000s metal band Dog Fashion Disco, they also threw a song or two from that discography into the set like “Worm in a Dog’s Heart“. I can’t say they were completely my cup of tea personally, but they had many devoted fans in the crowd, and vocalist Todd Smith could be seen meandering through the venue throughout the night taking pictures and signing autographs for some of those fans, surely making their nights that much more memorable.

At last, it was time for the debauchery known as a Psychostick set to commence, doing so with the intro skit/song “We Are a Band”, which included vocalist Rob “Rawrb” Kersey taking a staged phone call, before jumping into the hilarious riffage of tracks such as “Obey the Beard” and “This is Not a Song, It’s a Sandwich.” There were mosh pits a-plenty, including a decent sized circle pit during “Ultra Mega Fast”, as well as plenty of headbanging along to some of the band’s more viral hits like “Numbers (I Can Only Count to Four)” – an absolutely hysterical Sesame Street-inspired parody of Drowning Pool’s “Bodies”.

If you seek a band that is super polished and writes super deep and meaningful lyrics…keep looking. That’s not what Psychostick is about, and they’re totally cool with that. What a Psychostick show does provide, however, is a space to laugh, be silly, and just let loose and have a great time while listening to songs about dogs who like socks, drinking beer, and their favorite day of the week (which is Tuesday, by the way). The band does a phenomenal job of not taking themselves too seriously and encouraging their audience to do the same, something we all need a bit more of sometimes.

Psychostick’s current tour concludes on August 23 in Nashville, TN, then the band is heading back out on the road supporting Mushroomhead beginning on October 9 in Montreal. Tickets for all upcoming shows can be found on their website
