After weeks of Instagram posts teasing the start of the band’s new era and its initial announcement on the first of February, Wallows have finally released their new single “Your Apartment”. When asked about their new song, Wallows explains, “We’re so excited and eager to be releasing music for the first time in nearly two years. It’s the longest we’ve been silent and it feels good to finally be back. This is the first song from our new album that fully came together lyrically quite some time ago now, so it feels right that it gets heard first.” With the combination of a music video dropped alongside the single, an anniversary re-release of their first album Nothing Happens, and hints of a tour with possible venues double the size of their last, “Your Apartment” is a perfect introduction to this new era.
“Your Apartment” tells the story about the fallout of a rocky relationship, filled with miscommunication and unmet expectations. The song takes many stylistic cues from the band’s album Nothing Happens, blending melancholy lyrics with an upbeat instrumental. The song starts out in a low register with the band’s lead vocalist Dylan Minnette ruminating on a relationship gone wrong, not knowing what to say or do to make their partner understand that they’re hurting too. The song progressively gets more intense, introspective, and jaded as Minnette questions the validity of the relationship all along, the last chorus combining Minnette and guitarist Braeden Lemasters vocals over the driving instrumental of drums, guitars, and piano.
