Foo Fighters are back, and the passion still lives on after drummer, Taylor Hawkins’, untimely death in March 2022. The band is still in mourning, but instead of taking a break, they are using the emotion to write their 11th studio album, But Here We Are to be released on June 2, 2023. This album will be a demonstration of the healing powers of music in this tough time for the Foo Fighters family and fans.
On April 19, 2023, the anniversary of Taylors first show with the band back in the 90s, The Foos released the first single off the new album, “Rescue,” describing the first moments after Hawkins death. This is the first track on the new album.
The song comes out hard with heavy guitar and drums with a catchy but emotional lead line. A wash of guitar comes in right before the lyrics which read: “It came in a flash/ it came out of nowhere/ it happened so fast/ and then it was over.” After the chorus the song mellows out but the layered background music isn’t as simple as it seems. Guitar, piano, and keyboard pad still are playing and then they all blow up for a final beautiful punchy chorus. “We’re all free to some degree to dance under the lights/ I’m just waiting to be rescued/ bring me back to life.”
This song resonates with the Foo Fighters style of the early 2000s-2010s rather than their most recent two studio albums, Concrete and Gold and Medicine at Midnight. The band’s wounded spirits are being mended through the power of song, brotherhood, and family along with the knowledge that Taylor would want them to go on without him.
Going off of one of Taylor’s favorite bands and biggest inspirations, Queen: “The Show Must Go On.” FLY ON HAWK.
The Foo Fighters are scheduled to play their first show with their new drummer, who still remains unknown, on May 24, 2023 in New Hampshire.
