Generation

Interview By: Renae Garza

Introducing Generation, an upcoming band that will be taking over the music scene in 2023. This trio is made up of two brothers, Dean and James Carne, as well as their sensational drummer, Hattie Steel, making the group a triple threat. Based in Liverpool, the energetic band has had the privilege of supporting iconic artists such as The Crawlers. ”Death to the phony rockstar” will debut on March 31st with a music video following the release. This pop rock song is a great example of Dean’s musical abilities as he shows his passion for the haters in their upcoming single. In addition to Steel’s insane drumming, James’s hectic shredding also contributes to the impressive performance of the song. In the weeks leading up to the release of the band’s upcoming single, I was privileged to interview the triple threat.
Your new single “Death to the phony rockstar” is coming out soon. Tell me, what was the creative process, what inspired it, were there certain songs or artists that you pulled inspiration from?
“So our next single “Death to the phony rockstar” is out on the 31st March. The track title was actually inspired by a real hate comment on a hate video made about us. We found it hilarious, the song is just a massive middle finger to the trolls letting them know that they can say what they want but it only makes us stronger. So trolls if ur reading this thank you for inspiring us and we will see you at a live show soon yeh?”
You released “Suicidal Champagne” a year ago, what was the creative process with that, when writing music does someone take the wheel or is it a creatives process where the whole group is involved, someone has this idea and you all bounce off of it?
“Suicidal champagne was actually made a long time ago, this body of work was created by front man Dean and his brother/guitarist James. We were so young, around 18 and 19, we have definitely progressed as song writers/musicians since then. We even sometimes cringe at the idea of it because we have changed so much as people and writers, but we decided to leave it up so people can see the natural progression within our music/energy.”
You guys did a cover of “Unholy” by Sam Smith, totally killed it. How exciting was it and what was your favorite thing about recording it, was it challenging in any way?
“Covering Sam Smith was so exciting, it was such a fun process taking a pop song and turning it into something more rock and roll with a raw edge. We actually decided to cover this song the day before we were meant to support crawlers. On the actual day of the show we hit the rehearsal room, bashed it out for an hour or two and it sounded. The crowd loved it. The whole reason we decided to record it was because fans from the live shows where blown away & kept tweeting us and begging for a studio version, so we done it for the fans. Big love”
Who would be your dream collab?
“Yungblud would be a cool collab, we are actually doing a collab with someone atm so…”
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
“our biggest career highlight so far would have to be supporting our good friends crawlers at a sold out 02 show in our home town of Liverpool. It was insane, we played to around 2000 people, we had the whole place going crazy. We really came off that stage on a high.”
What’s everyone’s favorite song to perform?
“We all love playing an unreleased track called crazy talk it’s a rock and roll rammer”
Any pre-show rituals or post-show rituals?
“Hattie has this whole thing about needing to eat a ginger bread man from greggs (it has to be greggs) before every show, she eats them the same way every time, limbs first then the buttons, head last. We don’t even know how it started. (Maybe she pretends it’s one of her toxic ex bf’s?) It seems to work”
What have been your favorite venues to perform in, is there a dream venue that you’d love to perform in?
“We want to perform in the biggest venues known to exist. we would absolutely tear the roof off of the Wembley arena if given the chance….so any big artists looking for a bad ass support band, hit us up.”
For fans both near and far what can they expect from your live shows who have yet to see you guys perform?
“They can expect absolute chaos, rock and roll anthems, sexy outfits and most importantly a safe space to let yourself go, totally be yourself & make friends for life. That’s the vibe that we want to bring, we want people to leave our shows feeling fulfilled and inspired, we want them to leave and think, fuck I want to do that, even if it’s fashion, painting, performing, Music you name it. We just want to ignite that flame within people.”
At the end of the day, What do you hope people take away from your music?
“We hope people take away happiness, excitement and inspiration, we want to inspire as many people as possible, we want them to leave our shows wanting to start their own band, honestly seeing people smile when we perform is the best thing ever, knowing that you are giving them some kind of happiness.”
What is one message you would give to your fans?
“A message we would like to give to our fans is, just be you, it doesn’t matter how crazy or boring you think you are, you are totally unique and that’s what makes you YOU. Not everyone is going to understand/get you at first. trust us we know how that feels, but in the end it all works out. Just be true to yourself and try enjoy this crazy thing called life, we will be here waiting with open arms for you to rock out with us. “
